Shop to drop

If shopping is your bag then Bridgend County Borough has long since enjoyed reputation as a bustling shoppers’ paradise – its history as a market town dates back to the early 16th century. Today, the 18th century Market Bell still hangs in the Rhiw Shopping Centre, home not only to high street shops but also more than thirty stalls selling local produce and gifts.

Linked by a river walkway, the town centre offers a fantastic shopping experience. This is where you can while away a whole afternoon on traffic-free shopping and relaxation in a choice of Italian cafés and restaurants.

If you head just north of the county borough you’ll find the mighty McArthur Glen Designer Outlet which is full of bargains! It is home to over 90 designer brands including Levis, Ted Baker, Calvin Klein, French Connection and Kurt Geiger. Surfers and outdoor adventurers are equally well catered for, plus a wide selection of cafés, restaurants and the Odeon Entertainment Complex.

On the coast is Porthcawl town which is home to everything from diamonds and designer dresses to delicious pastries. The main shopping area is centred around John Street, just a pebble’s throw from the Esplanade.

Heading up the valleys, you will find Maesteg. Known for its historic architecture, Maesteg offers a charming indoor market and household names. Talbot St and Commercial St are the main shopping streets in Maesteg town centre.
